Worth It

Picture
By Katie Gibson

Motherhood makes me feel a bit invisible at times.

Sometimes I ask myself: Does anyone hear me?

Just this past week I had a full-fledged mommy meltdown about just that. There I sat, ugly-crying every bit of my pain, frustration, and mascara into a kitchen towel.

It wasn’t exactly my proudest moment.

God often has to bring me to these places of brokenness to get me to spill out my junk so that He can help sort and trash. It’s sort of like an internal episode of “Hoarders.”

I brought my heartaches out, one by one…

God, I feel invisible. I feel like nobody cares. I feel like nobody sees everything I do, day in and day out. Being a mom is… tough.

I figured, if nothing else, it felt good to be honest.

But in that moment, I heard His compassionate voice break through my laments,

“Are you not worth more than many sparrows?”

I have to admit, I chuckled out loud. There, an emotional train wreck, dressed in second-day yoga pants, covered in toddler residue and about three days behind on work— I didn’t feel worth a Q-tip. God’s choice of scripture for that moment baffled me.

Worth. The word wouldn’t stop echoing through the empty spaces of my soul.

I could feel God smiling on me, as light bulbs flickered on, one by one, enabling me to see the truth:

The crux of my pain and frustration was a seemingly unattainable goal I was striving to reach, yet it was something I possessed all along, and you have it too...

Worth.

Do you know how the value of an object is determined?
The answer is simple, right? An item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

In light of that question, think on this:
God, the Author and Creator of everything, did not spare even His own son for us (Rom. 8:32).

When we were held captive by the power of sin, Christ gave Himself as a ransom for us, bringing us into eternal life with Him (Matt. 20:28, Rom. 6:23).

The truth is that our worth is not based on what we do, or the things that we possess-- our worth was securely established, once and for all, when God paid for us with His son’s sacrifice.

However, we allow ourselves to be deceived and carry around the misbelief that if we have and do the right things and act a certain way, then we would be worthy, then people would see us.

Friend, your worth is not dictated by the numbers on a scale, your child’s behavior, or even your behavior.

Your worth is not affected by the number of children under your roof, or the empty longing in your heart.

Your worth does not change based on whether you spend your days climbing corporate ladders, or cleaning up spills.

Your worth is not determined by what happened to you in the past, or how you feel in the present.

Your worth does not fluctuate based on what others said to you, or didn’t.

Your worth does not increase if you can cook, craft, clean, breastfeed, run 3.1 miles or hold your temper… and neither does it decrease if you cannot.

The Father is saying to us today, “Stop wearing yourself out for worth.”

We are already deeply loved and dearly valued. It’s time to eradicate our misconceptions with the truth of God’s Word. We must learn to abide in the place of worthiness, in Christ. The place where all of the pressure is removed, and all of our worries and fears about measuring up are stamped “null and void” under the truth that God says we are worth it.

If you’re feeling unnoticed, unloved or undervalued today, remember that you are far more valuable than many sparrows, and God’s word says that not one of them falls to the ground without Him knowing (Matt. 10:29). God sees you, right where you are, and just as you are, and He delights in you.

No matter what, you are loved, you are treasured and you are worth it.

Word of the Day:
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NIV)

Prayer:
Father, thank you for your immeasurable love. Forgive me for wearing myself out for what was right in front of me all along-- the worth you bestowed on me when you gave your Son’s life for mine, purchasing eternal life on my behalf. Help me to learn how to abide in that place of worthiness. Thank you that I am fully known and infinitely treasured in You.

This is such a great reminder! My question is usually, "Doesn't anybody hear me?"
