Lost~Thursday

A big part of healing comes from seeing God as He truly is and seeing ourselves as He sees us. As we live life with all its twist and turns, ups and downs, without realizing it we begin to make assumptions about God.. Our assumptions usually line up with our experiences, and we can even take scripture out of context to support our beliefs.

So if life is good, we typically assume we are doing something right, and God is pleased, so He is letting things go well for us. Then maybe the day comes when tragedy strikes or the economy turns, and things are not going so well anymore.

If we believed things were good because of something we were doing, then the only logical thought process that follows is we have now done something to displease God, and He is punishing us or withholding something from us. And scriptural support?  We just have to look at Scriptures about sowing and reaping to   have our assumptions reinforced.

Did you know the enemy of our souls will use Scripture to distort our image of God and torment us? Satan did it to Jesus in the desert. In Luke 4:10, the enemy quotes straight from the Bible, word for word, telling Jesus (my paraphrase),  You know, your Father said he would send angels to protect you, to take care of you so you would not even stub your toe, but here you are starving and dying of thirst in the desert.

And if it hadn’t been Jesus, if it had been us listening to Satan’s use of scripture,we would have probably had some doubts about God’s Word to us. “That’s true. He did say that. And here I am - miserable in the desert. So what am I doing wrong? How have I messed this up? Why isn’t God showing up for me? I see Him showing up for other people.”

And in the midst of the doubt and misunderstanding, we make assumptions. We believe the lies of the enemy because they come through the very Word of God.

So how do we sort all this out? It seems so confusing if the enemy is using God’s very Word of Life against us. This is where we must know more than just the Word of God; we must also get to know the character of God. And we must let go of all our preconceived ideas based on our experiences, and focus instead on Truth.

“But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all Truth.”
John 16:13

Our prayer today:
Father God, there are things I have believed about you that I am starting to think may not be true. It feels confusing and overwhelming to sort through all of it, but I know you aren’t asking me to do this on my own. Please send Your Spirit to lead me into all Truth. Holy Spirit, I invite you, I welcome you, to be my Teacher and my Guide. Sometimes I feel lost, and I don’t understand why things seem to be going so wrong. It feels like I am either messing everything up, or like You are holding out on me. I don’t know which of those is worse! But I thank you that neither one is Truth. Your heart towards me is good. You are on my side, You are for me, not against me. Show me where I have believed lies about You and teach me the Truth. Let my heart be open to receive all You have for me.
