In Genesis 3, the serpent comes to Eve and twists the Word, and Eve believes him. And we all know how that turned out. She not only believed God was holding out on her, but in the wake that followed her and Adam’s sin, her heart was opened up to shame because of the enemy’s lies. Scripture says she realized she was naked and made a covering for herself. Isn’t this just like us? When we see our sin for what it is, instead of turning to Jesus to heal us of our sin, we set out to make things right, to fix things. We make our own coverings. We try to hide our shame, our failure, our inadequacy. We put on our masks and become what we think will be acceptable to the world around us; we put on things that we think will make us lovely, valuable, worthy. But these things are nothing but flimsy fig leaves. We are terrified that if anyone, even God, sees underneath the leaves, we will be found out for the frauds that we are. Because deep down we believe we really are not lovely, valuable, or worthy of anything. And here is where we need healing. We need God to heal the image we have of ourselves. The enemy has marred our understanding of who we are with his whispers in our ears of how we are nothing but the sum of our sins. Jesus calls to the deepest part of our hearts - the part that longs to know Him and be known by Him completely. He calls us by our true names and our true identities. He knows who we were created to be, and He calls those souls to become the glory that He intended. But whose voice do we usually shut down? It is so much easier to believe the lies of the enemy than to dare to hope that the whispers of Jesus could be true about us. We must believe Jesus! He is the way, the truth, and the life and He can only tell the truth! “I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:14 “For everything created by God is good and nothing is to be rejected…” 1 Timothy 4:4 Our heart’s cry: Jesus, we are desperate to see ourselves the way you see us! Remove all the shame and the sin and the lies that get in the way of us seeing the truth of whom we are. We are created for glory. We are co-heirs with Christ; you have made us glorious and righteous. Forgive us for choosing to believe the enemy of our souls over You. Forgive us for rejecting ourselves, for rejecting Your creation. Show us the truth of who we are and help us to live out of that place! Help us to embrace the healing you offer so we may live whole and complete in You. Author: Brooke Kireta
