Direction and Protection ~ Thursday

Picture
Because of sin in this world, bad things happen. Sometimes, even when we have done everything right.

Abel offered God a sacrifice from the fattened first-born of his flock. He was obedient in faith to what God had commanded. But his brother was not. A lack of faith, jealousy, and hatred in his heart caused Cain to slay his brother.

We may suffer harm in this world because of others’ sin. We may even experience pain and agony with no one to blame. These tests of our faith are the hardest to endure, but they are the ones with the most potential for refining us for His kingdom.

When we feel defenseless, we can ask the Holy Spirit to lead us in the next step of obedience. If we take that leap of faith and the predators continue to circle, we can be strong and courageous in the face of evil knowing God will never leave or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). The world is not worthy of those whose faith and trust endure despite undeserved hardship (Hebrews 11:37-38).

Abel’s righteousness was recorded not just in Genesis but also in the book of Hebrews, where because of his righteousness, Abel is listed as one of the heroes of the faith of which the world is not worthy. Though dead, his righteousness still has the honor of speaking to us through Scripture (Hebrews 11:4).

They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword.
They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated -
of whom the world was not worthy - wandering about
in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. (Hebrews 11:37-38)

If you are suffering because of another’s sin, take heart. Stop and notice the presence of God with you.

Dear Father,

In the times when I am afraid, hold me up and strengthen my faith. Reassure me that when I am up against seemingly insurmountable odds  you are there with me every step of the way, and I have nothing to fear. Remind me that even though evil in this world may kill my body, You have saved my soul for eternity.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
