Instead, in Genesis 16:16, she is told to go back to her mistress and submit to her. I don’t know what was going on in her mind when she was told to go back after she had just been found by the angel of God, but I think she may have been a bit disappointed—or was she? When you read on, you begin to see that the gift that God gave her was not a new situation but a new perspective.
She was instructed to name her son, Ishmael, which means God hears. Every time she called his name, whispered it in the night, or interacted with him, she was stating, God hears. A constant reminder that God was there. An every single day, moment by moment reminder that God was not far off. Not only that, but in verse 13 it says that Hagar had a new name for the Lord. She called Him, “You are the God Who sees me.” That is the life changer right there. You can walk through any situation in life with your head held high if you believe that. Loneliness and other things cannot consume when you truly believe that the God of the universe, who understands you more than you understand yourself is The God Who hears. If He is the God Who hears, no amount of internal chaos is untouchable by Him—the all knowing, all wise Heart Healer and Life Transformer.
Thank You that You are the God Who hears ME. Help me to see it and to know that You are near to me. I choose to believe even when I cannot see. Show me your heart for me. I give you my situations, my loneliness, and my broken places so that You can do what only You can do in my life. I will look to You for help. I wait confidently for You to save me and you will certainly hear me (Micah 7:7).
